Leaving a Godly Legacy: Relationship with God

Main Passage: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them upon your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 NIV)
Core Message: We are the stewards of God's legacy, tasked with making His presence known to future generations. We must move beyond mere religious routine to pass on a dynamic relationship with Christ and an unwavering reverence for His Word. By boldly testifying to His work in our lives, we weave His character into the very fabric of our families and communities forever.
Cultivating Real Relationship
Throughout life, many of us strive to leave a lasting legacy, whether through a family business, an inheritance, or a charitable cause. But when it comes to leaving a godly legacy, passing down traditions and morals isn't enough. These alone cannot transform a heart; they often leave the next generation with a hollow religion that looks godly but lacks the power to withstand the pressures of this world. As believers, however, we are called to lead the next generation deeper, into an authentic encounter with the living God that brings true faith and ultimate fulfillment in Him.
- The Motivation of Love: Mere religion is driven by the fear of breaking rules, but relationship is driven by love. We know that sin creates a barrier between us and the Father. Therefore, we are motivated by a simple, powerful desire: to stay near the One we love and avoid anything that would pull us away from Him.
- The Power of an Authentic Example: Relationship cannot be faked; it must be a lifestyle that is visible to our children, coworkers and friends. By grounding our lives in Scripture and prayer, continuously seeking to be in the Lord’s presence, we cultivate a genuine love for God. This love invites others to join our pursuit of His heart, providing a living example until they, too, come to know Him personally.
- Integrating Faith into Daily Life: Having a real relationship with God means involving Him in our normal routine. It’s about staying aware of Him from morning to night, so that talking to Him and thinking about Him becomes a natural part of our whole day. By discussing God’s goodness during common activities, like when eating a meal or on a drive, we teach those around us that He is not just a Sunday obligation, but a constant, relational God who cares for His children.
The Law of God as a Foundation for Flourishing
There is a common misconception that God’s laws are burdensome or restrictive. However, the Word of God is actually a life-giving foundation intended to protect us and ensure we are leaving a godly legacy that will prosper from generation to generation. Deuteronomy 7:9 tells us that God is faithful, “keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” His commands are not heavy chains; they are the boundaries that lead to a successful, fulfilled, and abundant life.
- Gratitude in the Midst of Plenty: God warns us in Deuteronomy 6:10-12 to be careful not to forget Him once we become comfortable and satisfied with the blessings He has provided. We must intentionally remember, and teach our children and those around us, that every good thing we possess—our homes, our safety, our families—is a result of His grace, moving us to follow His Word out of a heart of thanksgiving.
- The Word of God is Life-Giving: Just as a healthy household functions better when there are rules established in love, our lives flourish when we align ourselves with God’s statutes. The Bible is the ultimate guide for every stage of life, providing the wisdom needed to build a life of integrity and a legacy of character. By following His Word, we and those who follow after us, are able to live the abundant life here on earth, free from the destruction of sin.
- Empowered by Grace to Obey: While we are accepted by grace, the Holy Spirit empowers us to model His law in our daily lives. True freedom is found when God’s requirements are written on our hearts, leading us to live obedient, disciplined lives unto Him that point the next generation toward His lasting truth rather than the fleeting trends of the day.
Proclaiming the Mighty Works and Character of God
Our personal experiences with God’s power are not meant to be hoarded or kept secret; they are meant to be shared as a testimony to His character. Every time God heals a sickness, restores a broken marriage, or delivers someone from an addiction, He is revealing a specific aspect of who He is. By telling these stories, we provide the next generation with a foundation of faith that stands on the proven track record of God’s faithfulness.
- The Responsibility of Testimony: As Christians, we have a duty to ensure that the miracles we have witnessed do not die with us but are passed along to those who follow. Telling our children and peers about how God ‘pulled us out of the grave’ helps them understand that the God we serve is active, powerful, and deeply invested in their lives today.
- Understanding the Fullness of God: It is vital to pass on a complete picture of God that includes both His infinite love and His sovereign justice. He is a merciful Father who welcomes the humble, and He is also the Most High God whose holiness is a consuming fire against sin (Deut 4:24). It is in this understanding that we are able to teach those around us that God is not a casual acquaintance but a majestic King. Acknowledging His full majesty leads to a healthy, reverent fear of the Lord that anchors one’s faith for a lifetime.
- Ensuring an Eternal Echo: By declaring God’s victories, we honor the 'Great I Am' as our ultimate Healer and Deliverer. As Christians, we are raising a generation to worship with all that they have, fueled by the realization that if God hadn't stepped into our lives, we would have remained dead in our trespasses (Ephesians 2:4-5). But praise be to our God! Through the Lord Jesus Christ, He promises abundant life not just for now, but for all eternity!
Next Step: If your life was the only evidence someone had of who God is, would they see a religious checklist or a genuine connection to God? Let us commit to sharing the story of what God has done for us, knowing that our testimony has the power to reshape the course for generations to come!
