John 8:31-32
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Hi, Pastor Bob here. Welcome back to the Men of Valor podcast. The verse from today is from the book of John chapter 8 verse 31 and it states, “If you hold to my teachings, you really are my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

“It's not necessarily the truth that sets you free, it's the knowledge of the truth that sets you free.”
Obviously, the truth is very important to Jesus. Approximately seventy times in the gospels, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth” or “Very truly I tell you”. Jesus also says about fifteen times, “Let those who have ears to hear, hear”. Obviously, having physical ears is different than having ears to hear. You see, it's not necessarily the truth that sets you free, it's the knowledge of the truth that sets you free.

For centuries, bread had sat too long in houses until it got moldy. Then in 1928, Alexander Fleming looked closely at the mold and discovered bacteria around the mold was dying. That was actually the start of penicillin, the first antibiotic. And we can only guess how many millions of people have been healed because of that discovery. The point is, penicillin and the truth of penicillin, was around as long as bread but it took the knowledge of it to save people from the disease.

“What a brilliant question. “Jesus, what is truth?””
Jesus in John 14:6 said, “I am the truth.” Pilate, the ruler who condemned Jesus, actually asked Jesus in John 18:38 an absolutely great question. He asked Jesus, “What is truth?” Who better to answer that question than the Man who claimed to be the truth? What a brilliant question. “Jesus, what is truth?” The problem was, he didn't stick around to get the knowledge or perhaps how Jesus would have answered the question. He appears to have asked the question and then just continued on with what he was doing. Perhaps he really didn't want to know the truth. Have you ever done that? Have you ever asked God for an answer and not waited for the answer? It's almost like we just want credit for asking God something. I confess, I sure have done this. Have you?

Have you ever wondered about questions such as these:

Does Jesus in the Bible actually speak about Hell? Well, I tell you the truth, He does and He says many people are on the path that leads to Hell and there are few on the road that leads to Heaven. He actually talks more about Hell than all the other people in the Bible combined. That's the truth.

Does the Bible say anything about money? I tell you the truth, it actually refers to money and mammon more than Heaven and Hell.

Does the Bible say we can get to Heaven by being a good person or doing good works? I tell you the truth, it clearly says you cannot. It says the only way to get there is by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and love and obey Him.

Romans 1:28 says, “Just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so He gave them over to a depraved mind, so they do what ought not to be done.” Wow! Does that explain so many things that are going on in our world right now? Depraved sure sounds like a pretty accurate description of 2020 doesn't it? Having a bottle of penicillin and not taking it and wondering why the infection isn't leaving is depraved. But isn't it just like having your Bible and never reading to discover God's truth?

I encourage you to read or listen to our discipleship article on the unitedfaithchurch.org website and to take some action, and then, I tell you the truth, you will discover that the knowledge of the truth will set you free.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life."
