God’s Favor – Rebuilding the Ancient Ruins
Main Passage: Isaiah 61:1-2 “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn.”
Core Message: In the midst of the chaos we see around the world—economic upheaval, political turmoil, and cultural conflict—Jesus Christ is the enduring answer. This message declares that the Church is living in the year of God’s favor, a time prophesied in Isaiah 61, when God's Spirit is moving to redeem, restore, and empower His people. This divine movement calls believers to stop living for themselves, surrender fully to Christ, and actively participate in building His eternal Kingdom on Earth.
The Good News: Full Surrender for New Life
The time of God’s favor is marked by the proclamation of the Gospel, which brings new life.
- Trusting the Good News: The good news of the Gospel completely transforms the one who believes it! No longer do we live for ourselves, where we can so easily get caught up in the ‘rat-race’ of life. No longer do we have to try to ‘figure this life out.’ Rather, we rely on the good news that Jesus Christ died for us to give us new life—a life filled with purpose, joy and the power of God!
- For the Poor in Spirit: As stated in Isaiah 61, the good news is given to the "poor.” This refers to those who Jesus refers to in Matthew 5:3 as “poor in spirit," meaning humble or meek. Those who are poor in spirit are able to recognize that they cannot build up anything good or lasting, such as a family or career, apart from God. Instead, they trust wholly in the Lord for every aspect of life. When we become poor in spirit, we become rich in the joy and the love of the Lord, seeing that the price He paid to give us this new life did not come cheaply!
- Becoming True Sons: Full surrender to God transforms us into true sons of God who do not merely go through the motions of Christianity out of obligation, but rather find the utmost joy in following Him and in living according to our Heavenly Father’s will for our lives. The Bible tells us that all of creation, even the angels, are eagerly waiting for the true sons of God to be made known!
Freedom for the Captives: Striving for Full Restoration
Jesus came to proclaim freedom for those who have been captive to sin—not just a little bit of freedom here and there, but full deliverance!
- Healed and Whole: 2 Corinthians 13:11 encourages believers to “strive for full restoration.” To strive for this restoration means to actively ‘dig deep’—to search for and find any sin in our lives that keeps us from God, such as anger, resentment and insecurity. As believers, when we see any of these areas in our lives, we don’t just ‘put a band-aid on it’ and hope it goes away on its own. No, we trust that Jesus came to set us totally free, to heal us completely from the harmfulness of sin and we strive for full restoration to the Father!
- Authority of Jesus' Name: Deliverance does not come about by human effort, but God made provision for us to be set free through the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is seated at the right hand of God, far above all rule, power, and authority. There is power in the name of Jesus and there is nothing that His name cannot overcome!
- Deliverance Leads to Ministry: There is a beautiful purpose for deliverance in a Christian’s life. Yes, our own lives are transformed and made new, but our lives also become the demonstration of the power of God to those around us! Our testimony becomes the tool we have to minister to others and to help lead them into their freedom in Jesus Christ!
Rebuilding the Ancient Ruins: Loyalty and Honor in God's House
The time of God's favor is the time to rebuild and restore loyalty and honor to God in our lives and communities.
- A Time for Building: As believers, we are so thankful for all the Lord has done for us to bring us new life and to set us free, that we just can’t help but to build ‘altars of remembrance’ for God, never forgetting what He has done in our lives. We build these altars through our speech and actions, constantly reflecting gratitude for God’s goodness to us and demonstrating honor and loyalty to Him.
- Tell the World: When someone is truly thankful for something, they can’t stop talking about it. It is the same for a Christian who is overflowing with thankfulness for the blessings of God. It’s all we can talk about and everyone around us will hear about the Lord’s kindness. Our families will hear about it, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues! In doing this, we are building those spiritual altars of thanksgiving to God throughout our community!
- The Third Temple: In the Old Testament, there were two physical temples that were built over the centuries, which have since come to destruction and now lie in ruin. Isaiah 61 calls us to be those who rebuild the ancient ruins. The Bible talks about a "third temple," which is not a physical structure, but a house built in the hearts of God's people, where He sits enthroned and no idol—not children, money, or future plans—will ever take His place. This new temple is eternal and shall never be destroyed!
