Entering the gate of the Good Shepherd, John 10, the one way

Entering the Only Gate
Hebrews 6:7, John 10:1-5 NIV, John 9:39 NIV, John 10:7-13 NIV

Main Passage: John 10:1-5 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for Him, and the sheep listen to His voice. He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out. When He has brought out all His own, He goes on ahead of them, and His sheep follow him because they know His voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”

Core Message: The world constantly invents "alternative ways" to achieve joy, peace, and complete wellbeing—methods designed to skip the surrender required by Christ. However, Jesus declares Himself as the only Gate for the sheep, warning that whoever "climbs in by some other way is a thief and a robber.” True entry is found not through self-help or good deeds, but rather through the powerful act of humility: submitting one's pride and ways to God, recognizing Christ alone as the source of salvation and eternal life.

The Counterfeit vs. The One Way

  • The World's Delusion: Modern life is saturated with gimmicks, substances, and new methods (i.e. life coaching, diet plans, and breathing techniques). These promise the same results that Christianity brings (joy, peace, wholeness) while excluding Christ.
  • The Core Lie: This mirrors the error of the Pharisees, who believed following the law and ritual (their "alternate way") would grant them righteousness. This mindset, “Me plus good deeds equals Heaven," is described by Jesus as climbing over the fence instead of entering the Gate.
  • The Truth of Submission: Entering the Gate requires absolute surrender. It is a process of "going low" before God, stripping away one's pride, traditions, and self-reliance, and humbly declaring, "God, I am in need of a Savior."
  • A Temporary Fix: Secular methods, though they may alleviate symptoms, are merely a ‘Band-Aid’ and will not grant eternal life or true transformation.

The Blessings Found Only Through the Gate

  • True Salvation and Pasture: John 10:9 tells us that whoever enters through the Gate "will be saved" and "find pasture." This pasture represents a deep, lasting inner peace that comes from being right with God and knowing He is with you.
  • Intimate Relationship: The blessing of the flock is profound intimacy: "I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father." The essence of this relationship is hearing God’s voice and faithfully responding to it.
  • A Life of Fruitfulness: Drawing from Hebrews 6:7, those who "drink in the rain" (the Word of God) “will produce a useful crop” and “receive the blessing of God." This is where true strength, perseverance, and total healing are found.
  • Refuge from Chaos: When one submits to the King, the turmoil and chaos that once reigned inside the heart and house are expelled, leaving only external challenges that now must knock at the door.

Staff Up: The Call to Shepherds

  • The Crisis in the Church: The church is currently suffering from a lack of shepherds and an abundance of hired hands. A hired hand abandons the sheep when the wolf comes because he cares nothing for the flock.
  • The Shepherd's Charge: Those who have been redeemed are not meant to be passive sheep forever. They are called to rise up, "pick up a staff" (a sign of authority), and in turn be willing to "fill in a gap"—to protect the flock from the world's alternative, destructive ways.
  • Enduring Value: When Christ returns, all counterfeits—pride, self-reliance, temporary fixes—will fall away. Only the things established in God's name, such as the joy of salvation, the love of God, and the peace of submission, will remain eternal.

Next Step: Are you still trying to hold onto your own ways, or are you willing to humble yourself, and submit entirely to the Lord Jesus Christ as the only Gate to eternal life, joy, and peace?
