Chosen by God, God is greater, Zephaniah 3
Malachi 3:13-18 NKJV, Malachi 4:1-2 NKJV, Malachi 3:2-3 NKJV, Zephaniah 3:12 NIV

Main Passage: Malachi 3:16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the Lord And who meditate on His name.

Core Message: This message challenges the modern Christian notion that it is too difficult to follow God in the current cultural climate, by reminding us of the unwavering faithfulness of believers throughout history, even in the face of extreme opposition. God has always preserved a faithful "remnant"--those who are chosen by God, who refuse to compromise with the world. This message explores the characteristics of God’s remnant, urging every listener to examine their heart and choose to be counted among those chosen by God who stand firm for Christ.

Remaining Faithful to the Covenant

The remnant is defined by a singular, unwavering focus on God that causes the fleeting attractions of the world to become irrelevant.

  • Fixing Your Gaze on God: True faithfulness is born from being so satisfied in your covenant promise with God, that the chaos and corruption of the surrounding world cease to matter.
  • Rejecting Worldly Loopholes: The unfaithful seek "loopholes" to justify their disobedience, envying the “prosperity” of the wicked (Malachi 3:14–15). The faithful, however, humbly remember that they have received undeserved favor instead of the due penalty for sin. Therefore, they abide in the grace they have received, keeping them from the desire for worldly things that are contrary to the word of God.
  • Avoiding the Comparison Trap: Human nature is never satisfied, leading to jealousy and comparing one's possessions, skills, or status to others. Those chosen by God rest content, knowing God has reserved the ultimate blessings for His people.
Devotion to the King

The righteousness of God’s remnant is not merely an outward action but a deeply cultivated state of the heart, born of the Holy Spirit's transforming power.

  • Overflow of the Heart: Just as sin is conceived in the heart before it is birthed in action, righteousness wells up in the heart and overflows into visible obedience, where Jesus becomes Lord over your whole life. The question is: have you received the Holy Spirit that brings the lordship of Jesus into your life? Is your devotion to Him visible?
  • The "If, Then" Promise: If the heart is dedicated to God, then the promises of the covenant are fulfilled: spiritual protection, provision, fruitfulness, and healing (Deuteronomy 28 promises).
  • Meekness and Might: Those chosen by God embody meekness and humility before God, while simultaneously demonstrating a boldness and courage in fighting against sin and upholding the church.
The Refiner's Fire
  • The Coming Day of Distinction: For the faithful, God arises as the Sun of Righteousness with healing in His wings (Malachi 4:2).
  • A Daily Refinement: Malachi 3:2-3 says that God is like a refiner’s fire. He purifies His people like gold and silver so that they “may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness.” God’s remnant are those who willingly present themselves before the Lord daily, allowing him to expose and purify their hidden motives and old wounds. They come to God’s altar, asking to be refined by fire to purge all impurities.
  • The Path to Acceptable Sacrifice: God's standard is righteousness. Out of His goodness, He paved the way through Christ's sacrifice, allowing us to be transformed by the Holy Spirit so that we can offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord. This daily refinement is preparation for our eternal life in Heaven.

Next Step: Ask yourself -  In what specific areas of my life do I need to surrender to God, devote myself fully to Him, and present myself to the Refiner’s fire for purification?
