The Appointed Time & Season of God

Ecclesiastes 3:1–8
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance..."

Galatians 6:9

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." There are different seasons that God appoints in our lives, and Scripture has a great deal to say about them. Understanding the times and seasons we walk through — and knowing who holds them — changes how we live in the middle of them.

Times and Seasons in the Bible

times and seasons in the Bible — Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 and the season of GodWhen we think about seasons, one of the first Scriptures that comes to mind is Ecclesiastes chapter 3. In the opening eight verses we are reminded:

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot..."

The passage goes on, pairing opposite after opposite. A time to tear down and a time to build. A time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to keep silent and a time to speak. Solomon is not writing a list of unrelated moments. He is describing the shape of a life — that the different seasons we experience are not accidents or interruptions, but part of something ordered.

Some seasons bring joy and others bring sorrow. There are seasons of planting and seasons of harvesting, seasons of building and seasons of waiting. Every one of them has a time appointed to it.

But through all of them, we can remember this: God is our Creator. He is King and Lord over all, and every season remains under His authority.

There is an appointed time and season for all things, and God remains Lord over every one of them.

What Does the Appointed Time Mean in the Bible?

God's appointed time - Galatians 6:9, at the proper time we will reap a harvestThe appointed time in the Bible is the moment God Himself has set for something to come to pass. The meaning is straightforward, but it carries real weight: the timing does not belong to us. It is not chance, it is not luck, and it is not the result of our own planning. It is fixed by God.

Scripture uses the phrase deliberately. When we read that something happened at the appointed time, we are being told that God had already determined it. The event did not arrive early because someone pushed, and it did not arrive late because someone failed. It arrived when God had appointed it to arrive.

That is a hard truth in a waiting season and a comforting one in hindsight. It means the delay we are living through is not evidence that God has forgotten. It means the timeline is in better hands than ours.

God Is the God of Time and Season

If there is an appointed time for all things, then the most important question is not when but who. And Scripture answers plainly: He is the God of time and season.

He does not merely observe the seasons. He appoints them. The God of time and season set the boundaries of day and night, the rhythm of planting and harvest, the rise and fall of kingdoms, and the span of every life. Nothing in the calendar of history falls outside His authority.

This is why the believer can hold a season loosely. We are not at the mercy of the season itself. We are in the hands of the One who appointed it.

At the Appointed Time: Examples in Scripture

Throughout the Bible we see the God of time and season working according to His perfect timing.

He appointed the time for Jesus to be born — Galatians tells us that when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son. Not before, not after.

He appointed the time when the Israelites would be delivered from slavery in Egypt. They cried out for generations. The deliverance came at the appointed time, not at the first cry.

He appointed the time for Abraham and Sarah to receive the promised son, long after it appeared possible.

And in each of our own lives, there is a time when God draws us to Himself — when our eyes are opened to the salvation found in the Lord Jesus Christ and we come into new life in Him.

There is an appointed time and season for the purposes of God.

Galatians 6:9 and God's Appointed Time

So as followers of Jesus, what should our focus be through these changing seasons? The Lord gives us direction in Galatians 6:9:

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

That proper time is God's appointed time. Notice what the verse assumes — that there will be a stretch between the sowing and the reaping long enough for us to grow tired in it. Paul does not pretend the wait is short. He tells us not to quit inside it.

Don't give up on the good things God has called you to do. Keep seeking Him, because the harvest comes in His appointed time.

So what do we focus on while we wait? We focus on being faithful to God. We continue seeking the Lord. We continue praying, obeying, serving, and drawing near to Him. We do not allow ourselves to become weary, because we know that at the proper time — at the season appointed by God — there will be a harvest if we do not give up.

Why Understanding Times and Seasons Matters

There is a reason Scripture gives so much attention to times and seasons. Understanding the season we are in shapes how we respond to it.

A farmer who does not know the season will plant in the wrong month and wonder why nothing grows. In the same way, a believer who misreads the season may strive where God has called them to wait, or grow passive where God has called them to work.

Recognizing that we are in a season of planting keeps us from despairing that there is no fruit yet. Recognizing that we are in a season of waiting keeps us from forcing a door God has not opened. Recognizing that we are in a season of harvest keeps us grateful rather than proud.

Understanding times and seasons does not mean predicting God's calendar. It means submitting to it.

Whatever Season You Are In

Whatever season you may find yourself in today, keep your eyes upon the Lord.

Maybe you are in a season of planting and you have not yet seen the fruit. Maybe you are walking through a season of waiting and wondering when something will change. Maybe God is building something new in your life, or perhaps He is asking you simply to remain faithful right where you are.

Whatever the season, God has not changed. He is still Lord. He is still faithful. He is still working, and He is still calling His people to seek Him.

So don't become weary. Keep pressing into God. Keep praying. Keep believing. Don't stop simply because the season has become difficult or because you have not yet seen the harvest. Continue walking with Jesus. Continue allowing the Holy Spirit to strengthen you. Continue trusting that the God who appointed the season also knows exactly what He desires to accomplish through it. At the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Praise God today that He is the author and finisher of our faith. Our confidence is not in the season itself, but in the God who remains faithful through every season. May we seek Him faithfully in the planting, trust Him in the waiting, praise Him in the harvest, and remain surrendered to His will through it all.

May you be blessed in this season of God, in this appointed time, and in all that the Lord desires to do and accomplish in His people. In Jesus' name, amen.
